DESCRIPTION:Failure to train new supervisors to properly lead\, manage\, and run the day-to-day operations of the agency is one of the most common problems in public safety today. Leaders must be built within an organization and understanding the basics of leadership and management will be critical to help the new supervisor transition into their position. DESCRIPTION:(2-hour training blocks) \nThis course provides various scenarios where officers respond to and react to situations that they may encounter while on duty. Officers interact with computer generated scenarios using verbal commands\, use of cover\, and the use of firearms as needed. Officers are critiqued at the completion of the scenario during the post critical incident reviews. \nGoals and Objectives \n*              Participants will be able to recognize threats\, select appropriate course(s) of action. \n*              Participants will be able to identify themselves when reasonable and give verbal challenges. \n*              Participants will learn the value of cover and concealment and the proper use of them. \n*              Participants will obtain invaluable experience in high stress scenarios which will aid them in their everyday encounters. \n*              Minimum of four scenarios per participant \n*              Various situations which will require participants to utilize: \n1) cover and concealment \n2) commands \n3) possible use of force \nDuty wear required. All firearms will be secured before participating. DESCRIPTION:AM Session 8a-12p:\nThis patrol-based investigative training course is specifically designed for road patrol police officers\, and investigators tasked with investigating stolen vehicles. Attendees will be instructed in the most comprehensive and current theft investigative methods including forensic identification of suspected stolen ATVs\, UTVs\, Snowmobiles and Motorcycles\, past/present VIN formats\, label designs\, and locations of factory primary and secondary identification numbers. DESCRIPTION:In the past few years\, we have encountered a World-Wide pandemic\, something most of us never thought we would see in our lifetime. We have witnessed multiple police officers\, sworn to protect\, be convicted of inhumanely taking another’s life. We have lived in a world unimaginable to most that has adversely affected arguably everyone. \nThis course is designed to HELP police officers get through these trying times. HELP officers to understand how and why they seem to be under attack. The program will HELP officers to understand their own personal biases and how they affect their actions on the job. Officers will learn how to not end up in the news media due to actions that could have been avoided. Lastly\, officers will learn to de-escalate the potentially explosive confrontations that they will certainly experience in today’s climate. \nTOPICS INCLUDE: \n\nImplicit Bias • Unconscious Bias •Verbal De-escalation\nCultural Competency • Tactical Communication\n\nINSTRUCTOR: Darnell Blackburn – Mr. Blackburn served 19 years as a District Field Representative with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES)\, assigned to oversee standards compliance with police academies in southeastern Michigan and the regulating standards for licensing police agencies in the state. Prior to joining the MCOLES staff\, Darnell served 9 years with the Michigan State University and Auburn Hills Police Departments working in uniformed patrol\, community policing and as a narcotics investigator. SUMMARY:Basic Motorcycle Training
DESCRIPTION:This is an 80-hour course\, June 6 through June 17. \nThis course is designed on the Northwestern Model with the goal of providing police officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to properly operate a police motorcycle and enhance their personal safety.  The motorcycle must be provided by the student’s agency and be in safe operating condition. Please be advised that some damage will likely occur to the motorcycle during training. \nStudents will focus on various practical exercises that stress low-speed maneuverability\, curve negotiation\, evasion techniques and high-speed braking skills.  Students spend a large portion of the course in the saddle\, practicing practical exercises and receive riding instruction supplemented with classroom instruction and demonstrations of tactical techniques. \nStudents are required to have a valid motorcycle endorsement prior to the start of class\, successful completion of a Michigan endorsement course\, or proof of pending motorcycle endorsement approval. \nStudents are tested on course exercises as well as in multiple choice written format. Students must successfully complete both testing processes to complete this course. \nInstructor:  \nJon Strom\, a certified police motorcycle instructor\, attended the Northwestern University Police Motorcycle Instructor School\, valid certificate through 2024. He has been a certified police motor operator since 2001.
