SUMMARY:Advanced Topics in DNA
DESCRIPTION:NEW METHODS TO SOLVE COLD CASES AND OTHER MAJOR CRIMES \nMajor advancements have been made in forensic DNA testing in recent years.  These advancements in technology include increased in technology include increased sensitivity\, new methods to interpret complex mixtures\, specialized search techniques of the CODIS database\, and many more.  This class will highlight these advancements and focus on utilizing them when routing DNA analysis has not solved a case.  This class will be particularly useful for looking at cold cases with a fresh eye to see if additional testing may be possible. \nTopics Covered Will Include: \n\nProbabilistic genotyping software\nFamilial searching of the CODIS database\nY-STR testing\nNew STR chemistries\nPhenotyping/ancestry testing\nCase Studies\n\nFacilitators: \nDanielle Hankinson has been a forensic scientist in the Biology/DNA discipline for over 13 years.  She has worked for both the Virginia Department of Forensic Science and the MSP.   Danielle has BS and MS degrees from Michigan State University and is certified in Molecular Biology by the American Board of Criminalistics.  She is the current President of the Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientists. \nAmanda Fazi is a DNA analyst for DNA Labs International.  She has over ten years’ experience working as a forensic biologist and crime scene investigator\, with previous experience at the Michigan State Police Northville Crime Lab and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab.  She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences from Wayne State University and a Master of Science Degree in Forensic Science (Biology Concentration) from Michigan State University. \nDate/Times:       Thursday\, May 2\, 2024\, 8:3oam-4:30pm \nLocation:             Mott Community College Southern Lakes Branch Center\, Room 1206\, 2100 W. DESCRIPTION:AM Session 8a-12p:\nThis patrol-based investigative training course is specifically designed for road patrol police officers\, and investigators tasked with investigating stolen vehicles. Attendees will be instructed in the most comprehensive and current auto theft investigative methods including forensic identification of suspected stolen vehicles\, past/present VIN formats\, label designs\, and locations of factory primary and secondary identification numbers. Attendees will also be briefed on past and present methods used by criminals to alter and conceal the true identity of passenger vehicles; in addition\, attendees will also be educated on the most current auto theft trends\, other associated crimes to auto theft\, case preparation\, and an overview of a variety of auto theft related investigative databases. \nPM Session 1p-4p:\nThis patrol-based investigative training course is the only MCOLES registered law enforcement training course of its kind in the State of Michigan. The course is an investigative guide that provides law enforcement officers with an expert overview of the LEIN accessed motor vehicle Electronic Insurance Verification (EIV) system\, as well as recognition techniques for counterfeit proof of insurance certificates.
