SUMMARY:CopShock
DESCRIPTION:This two-day class was developed to address officer responses to Critical Incidents or “Toxic” experiences that have the potential to emotionally cripple officers and to address the “corrosive” or cumulative effects of the job that assault officers every day. \n  \nThe law enforcement community rewards traits such as physical toughness\, independence\, emotional restriction\, and the ability to react in the face of traumatic events.  However\, it is unquestionable that police officers and support personnel face specific psychological distress on the job as a result of exposure to toxic and corrosive situations.  As a result\, many officers suffer from high rates of depression\, anxiety\, stress\, anger management problems\, and relationship difficulties.  At times\, the level of critical incident stress and occupational stress leads to: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, Major Depression\, Substance Abuse\, Alcoholism\, and at worst\, Suicide.  However\, by studying and understanding potential emotional and physical reactions to critical incidents and everyday organizational stressors\, officers can develop the personal and social resilience to truly survive and grow in the law enforcement professional and their personal lives. \n*******Dr. Gardner’s classes have continually received exceptional evaluations. \nInstructor:  LaMaurice H. Gardner\, Psy.D\, Police Psychologist \nClass Size:               Limited to 40 \nCost:                        LEORTC Member Licensed Officers –    Prepaid \nLEORTC Non-Licensed Personnel –         $75.00 \nNon-Member Agencies –                        $125.00 \nClick HERE to Register \n“This training has been registered with MCOLES for the use of PA 302 Law Enforcement Distribution funds.”

Gardner\, Psy.D\, Police Psychologist \nClass Size:               Limited to 40 \nCost:                        LEORTC Member Licensed Officers –    Prepaid \nLEORTC Non-Licensed Personnel –         $75.00 \nNon-Member Agencies –                        $125.00 \n  \nClick HERE to Register \n

SUMMARY:Fair & Impartial Policing
DESCRIPTION:The Fair & Impartial Policing (FIP) curricula is based on the science of implicit bias.  Implicit biases can impact what people perceive and do\, even in people who consciously hold non-prejudiced attitudes.  The implication of the science of bias is that even the best law enforcement officers may manifest bias because they are human\, and even the best agencies will have biased policing because they hire humans. The FIP curricula are founded on the following fundamental principles: \nThe FIP Training Program for Patrol Officers is an 8-hour program that applies the modern science of bias to policing; it trains officers on the effect of unconscious bias and gives them the information and skills they need to reduce and manage their biases. The curricula address\, not just racial/ethnic bias\, but biases based on other factors\, such as gender\, sexual orientation\, religion\, socio-economic status\, age\, and more.  Officers will learn: \n\nAll people\, even well-intentioned people\, have biases\nHaving biases is normal to human functioning \nBiases are often implicit or unconscious\, and can impact our perceptions and decisions\nTo recognize their implicit biases\, and how to implement skills to manage biases\nHow promoting fair and impartial policing can strengthen police- community trust\n\nFIP National Instructors represent local\, county\, state\, and university police\, and bring practical\, “street-wise” applications for law enforcement personnel at all levels of the organization. \nInstructor:  Lt. Sandra Brown\, FIP\, LLC\, retired. \nLieutenant Brown brings 29 years of law enforcement experience\, serving with the Palo Alto (CA) Police Department from 1988 until 2011. She held numerous leadership positions within the department\, including Internal Affairs Commander\, Personnel and Training Coordinator\, Media Relations and Department Spokesperson\, and Workers’ Compensation Manager. Lt. Brown served as a member of the Fair and Impartial Policing Curriculum Design Team and was instrumental in developing the Supervisors’ curriculum. Ms. Brown is based in Oakland (CA). \nCost:\nLEORTC Licensed Members – Prepaid\nLEORTC Non-Licensed Personnel – $50 p/p\nNon-Member Agencies – $95 p/p \nClass Size: Limited to 30 \nClick HERE to Register

SUMMARY:Fair & Impartial Policing
DESCRIPTION:The “fair and impartial policing perspective” reflects a new way of thinking about the issue of biased policing–based on the science of bias. Social psychologists who study bias report that bias has changed in our society.   As one scientist proclaimed\, “This is not your grandmother’s prejudice” (Fiske\, 2008).   These scientists have determined—through voluminous research on this topic—that bias today is less likely to manifest as explicit bias (such as racism) and more likely to manifest as “implicit bias.”   Social psychologists have shown that “implicit” bias can impact what people perceive and do; it works below consciousness and manifests even in people who consciously hold non-prejudiced attitudes. Like explicit bias\, implicit bias can produce discriminatory actions. \nThe 6 hour training covers the (1) science of bias and (2) implications of the science-based perspective for agency policy and practice. \nTopics Covered: \n\nWhat community members and police think about biased policing\nThe social science of human bias and its implications for policing \nThe benefits and elements of a comprehensive program to facilitate fair and impartial policing\nMeaningful policy\nLeadership\, supervision and accountability\nRecruitment/hiring \nEducation/training\nAssessing institutional policies and practices\nMeasurement\n\nResponding to disparity charges\nData Collection: The issues\, the facts\n\n\nOutreach to communities\nHow to implement a comprehensive program.   \n\n\nFacilitators: Sgt. Matt Elzinga and Detective Karen Rivard from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety have extensive law enforcement experience and are certified Fair and Impartial Policing Trainers. \nCost:\nLEORTC Licensed Members – Prepaid\nLEORTC Non-Licensed Personnel – $50 p/p\nNon-Member Agencies – $95 p/p\nClass Size: Limited to 25 (2 per agency for initial registrations) \n“This training has been registered with MCOLES for the use of PA 302 Law Enforcement Distribution funds.” \nClick HERE to Register
