SUMMARY:4th Amendment: Updated Search & Seizure for Patrol
DESCRIPTION:Law Enforcement Regional Training Commission \npresents \n4th Amendment: Updated Search & Seizure for Patrol \n \nDate: February 18\, 2026\, 8:30am-4:30pm \nLocation: Grand Blanc Township Police Department\, 5405 S. Saginaw Street\, Grand Blanc\, MI 48507 \nEvery officer who makes arrests\, conducts searches of any kind\, or detains anyone for the purposes of questioning them\, must thoroughly understand the parameters set forth by the Fourth Amendment related to search and seizure. A lack of that understanding gravely jeopardizes cases and exposes you and your department to expensive legal liability and ultimately give criminals an avoidable and undeserved ticket to freedom. \nThis course is designed to give law enforcement professionals of all ranks a complete understanding of the Constitutional parameters that apply to search and seizure; the protections due citizens and the leeway officers have while performing their duties. \nAmong other topics\, Detective Mike Montgomery\, a detective with the West Chicago Police Department\, will approach—in an extremely practical and understandable fashion—topics like: \n\nCitizens’ reasonable expectation of privacy.\nNon-physical and physical intrusions.\nLegal requirements to launch an investigation\, execute arrests or conduct searches.\nWhat constitutes reasonable\, articulable suspicion and probable cause.\nHandling drivers and passengers during traffic stops.\nLegally extending stops for the purpose of investigation.\nPlain view\, plain smell and K9 sniffs.\nPat downs\, frisks and plain feel…and much more.\n\nThis course is both crucial and immediately applicable. No officer can afford to miss this information\, and no agency can have officers who don’t fully understand the Fourth Amendment! \nCost:               LEORTC Licensed Members – Pre-Paid \nNon- Licensed Members – $99 \nAll Others- $199 \nClick to REGISTER below: \nhttps://form.123formbuilder.com/6888767/training-application-form \nThis training is registered as\, “Commission Designated Continuing Professional Education (CPE).”

SUMMARY:Background Investigations for Michigan Police Applicants
DESCRIPTION:State statutes require law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough and comprehensive background investigations of those who will be licensed as fully empowered law enforcement officers in the state of Michigan. A comprehensive background investigation is perhaps the most important component of the hiring process because it helps agencies select only those who are the best fit for both the organization and the communities they serve. In 2019\, the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards adopted an Advisory Standard to assist investigators in their efforts to obtain the necessary and relevant information on an applicant’s background\, as part of the agency’s overall selection and hiring process. Thorough work done at the beginning of the hiring process\, with attention to detail\, can help agencies select the right applicant for the right reasons. The purpose of this course is to provide participants with useful information and resources that will assist them in conducting a thorough background investigation. Those attending will learn about\ncontemporary strategies in completing a comprehensive\, competency-based pre-employment background investigation on police applicants.\n\nTopics will include: \n\nThe police officer hiring process.\nMCOLES Advisory Standard & Selected Best Practices for Background Investigations\nLegal concerns\nSuggested background investigation forms.\nCriminal record searches\nDocument verification\nBackground Interviewing\nEmployment verification\nMilitary service verification\nEducational verification\nReference checks\nInternet searches\nOut of state applicants\nBackground investigation reports\n\n\nAttendees are encouraged to bring to the class a blank copy of their own department’s background questionnaire for\npolice applicants.\n\n\nInstructor:  Pete Ackerly is a retired Special Agent from the Michigan Department of Attorney General and has conducted pre-service background investigations on applicants for law enforcement positions across the state of Michigan.  Pete currently works for MCOLES\, where he conducts Standards and Compliance investigations.\n\nDate/Time:  Thursday\, October 16\, 2025\, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm\n\nLocation:  Grand Blanc Township Police Department\, 5405 S. SUMMARY:Rental Communities Crime Prevention
DESCRIPTION:This course is open to both members of public safety and civilian apartment complex managers and single-family rental unit landlords.   This four hour seminar will offer participants a fresh approach to reducing 911 calls for service and increasing tenant’s quality of life through tried and true best practices and case studies. \nAttendees will learn that there are three important principles to deterring crime and creating rental community efficiency. \nPartnerships- Neither Police Officers\, Rental Community Management\, nor Residents can fight crime and quality of life issues alone.  A reciprocated union is required to fix reoccurring issues and the only way to find success is through a collaborative effort. \nPrevention- The understanding that prevention is always better than having to seek a cure.  This is accomplished through critical risk assessments put into action to achieve a preventative goal. \nParticipation- The realization that crime is a community problem which requires everyone working together to reduce or prevent it.  This is the true essence of the police and citizen partnership and only when put into actual practice can cooperative strategies be implemented to fix reoccurring problems.  Total success and profitability can be realized when all stakeholders become involved. \nInstructor:   Chris Fredenburg of the Saginaw Township Police Department.  He is an Advanced Crime Prevention Specialist and has extensive experience working with rental communities both with large tenant occupancy and small duplex and single-family rental units. \nCost (each class):               LEORTC Member:  Prepaid      Civilian Participants: $35.00 \nNon-Members:  $65.00 \nLocation (all classes):       Grand Blanc Twp.
