SUMMARY:Background Investigations for Michigan Police Applicants
DESCRIPTION:State statutes require law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough and comprehensive background investigations of those who will be licensed as fully empowered law enforcement officers in the state of Michigan. A comprehensive background investigation is perhaps the most important component of the hiring process because it helps agencies select only those who are the best fit for both the organization and the communities they serve. In 2019\, the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards adopted an Advisory Standard to assist investigators in their efforts to obtain the necessary and relevant information on an applicant’s background\, as part of the agency’s overall selection and hiring process. Thorough work done at the beginning of the hiring process\, with attention to detail\, can help agencies select the right applicant for the right reasons. The purpose of this course is to provide participants with useful information and resources that will assist them in conducting a thorough background investigation. Those attending will learn about\ncontemporary strategies in completing a comprehensive\, competency-based pre-employment background investigation on police applicants.\n\nTopics will include: \n\nThe police officer hiring process.\nMCOLES Advisory Standard & Selected Best Practices for Background Investigations\nLegal concerns\nSuggested background investigation forms.\nCriminal record searches\nDocument verification\nBackground Interviewing\nEmployment verification\nMilitary service verification\nEducational verification\nReference checks\nInternet searches\nOut of state applicants\nBackground investigation reports\n\n\nAttendees are encouraged to bring to the class a blank copy of their own department’s background questionnaire for\npolice applicants.\n\n\nInstructor:  Pete Ackerly is a retired Special Agent from the Michigan Department of Attorney General and has conducted pre-service background investigations on applicants for law enforcement positions across the state of Michigan.  Pete currently works for MCOLES\, where he conducts Standards and Compliance investigations.\n\nDate/Time:  Tuesday\, March 12\, 2024\, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm\n\nLocation:  Flint Township Police Department\, 5200 Norko Drive\, Flint\, MI 48507\n\nCost:  LEORTC Licensed Members – Prepaid     LEORTC Non-Licensed Personnel – $55 p/p\nNon-Member Agencies – $125 p/p\n\n\n\nClick HERE to Register \n“This training has been registered with MCOLES for the use of PA 302 Law Enforcement Distribution funds.”
