SUMMARY:Edged Weapons & Knife Attacks
DESCRIPTION:People have been using edged weapons since the beginning of time. They are still around in one form or another. Ever since the terrible events of 9/11\, where the hijackers used box cutters\, there has been an increased awareness of edged weapons.  As recently as 2017\, a high-profile terrorist attack occurred at Flint Bishop Airport.  The suspect used a 12” knife to severely injure a police officer. \nThis program addresses the psychological stress of an edged weapon confrontation and how to defend against it using the OODA Loop principle. Students will participate in scenario-based practical exercises.  Most people have no idea how to defend against an attack with a sharp object. Most what you see on TV is just enough to get people hurt. \nThis training addresses two sides of the edged weapons story. First it deals with defending against an attack. SUMMARY:Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC)
DESCRIPTION:The Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) course was developed from the military Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) training. SUMMARY:Courtroom Testimony for Police/Corrections Officers
DESCRIPTION:This 1 day\, dynamic\, interactive training will prepare police officers to not only survive\, but thrive in the courtroom\, even from a barrage of cross exam questions from the toughest of defense attorneys.  Participants in this class will learn all the tricks of the defense attorney trade\, how to overcome them\, and become the most effective\, persuasive\, and important player in the courtroom. \nReviews of this class have been overwhelmingly positive.  It is an exceptionally positive experience\, taught by an instructor with 30 years of courtroom experience.  It is fun\, practical\, and exceedingly helpful.  Learn all the things you were never taught in the police academy about winning convictions and making them stick!  You will participate in mock trials\, watch videos of other officer’s testimony\, and learn how to do it right!  If you’ve ever had a bad courtroom experience\, are new\, or simply need to gain some confidence\, take this course! \nThis is a full 1 day course\, consisting of 3 parts.  The first part consists of a mock trial\, where participants review police reports and actually testify in both direct and cross exam.  Attendees will alternate between playing the roles of witness\, juror\, and audience.  Everyone will participate throughout the morning\, and opportunities for frequent feedback will be given.  Cross exam will be challenging and demonstrate the most common defense techniques utilized to “trap” police officers and make them look bad.  Experience has shown that this part of the course\, utilizing audience participation and feedback\, is most appreciated and fun.  The second part consists of a lecture identifying all important aspects of effective police officer testimony\, identifying both the key factors to focus on\, as well as what to avoid. SUMMARY:Autism Training For 1st Responders
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: This training session will focus on defining autism\, recognizing autism in the field\, and strategies for interacting and engaging with people with autism. The three most common\, high-risk calls involving people with autism will be presented and discussed as well as criminal justice contact trends and interview techniques. Information specific to fire\, EMS\, and emergency room personnel is included. The training session is presented through multimedia images\, audiovisual video\, lectures\, and handouts. Case examples will be discussed. \nInstructors: Drs. Christine Kenney and Melissa Sreckovic are associate professors at the University of Michigan-Flint in the Education Department. Dr. Sreckovic earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Special Education with a focus on autism spectrum disorders and her MA from Michigan State University in Special Education and Literacy. Dr. Kenney earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Language\, Literacy\, and Culture and her MA from Eastern Michigan University in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Special Education. Drs. Sreckovic and Kenney have worked with individuals with autism for more than 15 years\, including young children\, adolescents\, and adults. SUMMARY:Footwear Impressions Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This one-day hands-on course is designed for crime scene investigators\, police officers\, evidence technicians\, and other personnel\, who have the responsibility to properly document and collect footwear evidence at the crime scene. This course is geared toward both experienced evidence collection personnel as well as personnel with limited experience in footwear evidence processing.\n\nParticipants will learn how to locate\, collect and preserve footwear evidence.\n\n\n\nRequired Equipment:  Digital Camera\, Owner’s manual for the camera\, and a Tripod\n\n\nInstructor:  Forensic Scientist Keith LaMont\, Director/MSP Bridgeport Crime Lab. Mr. LaMont has been with the trace evidence unit of the Crime Lab for 18 years. His areas of expertise include footwear and tire tracks\, crime scene processing\, arson\, paint\, glass\, and explosive residue. SUMMARY:Autism Training for First Responders
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: This training session will focus on defining autism\, recognizing autism in the field\, and strategies for interacting and engaging with people with autism. The three most common\, high-risk calls involving people with autism will be presented and discussed as well as criminal justice contact trends and interview techniques. Information specific to fire\, EMS\, and emergency room personnel is included. The training session is presented through multimedia images\, audiovisual video\, lectures\, and handouts. Case examples will be discussed. \nInstructors: Drs. Christine Kenney and Melissa Sreckovic are associate professors at the University of Michigan-Flint in the Education Department. Dr. Sreckovic earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Special Education with a focus on autism spectrum disorders and her MA from Michigan State University in Special Education and Literacy. Dr. Kenney earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Language\, Literacy\, and Culture and her MA from Eastern Michigan University in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Special Education. Drs. Sreckovic and Kenney have worked with individuals with autism for more than 15 years\, including young children\, adolescents\, and adults. DESCRIPTION:State statutes require law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough and comprehensive background investigations of those who will be licensed as fully empowered law enforcement officers in the state of Michigan. A comprehensive background investigation is perhaps the most important component of the hiring process because it helps agencies select only those who are the best fit for both the organization and the communities they serve. In 2019\, the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards adopted an Advisory Standard to assist investigators in their efforts to obtain the necessary and relevant information on an applicant’s background\, as part of the agency’s overall selection and hiring process. Thorough work done at the beginning of the hiring process\, with attention to detail\, can help agencies select the right applicant for the right reasons. The purpose of this course is to provide participants with useful information and resources that will assist them in conducting a thorough background investigation. SUMMARY:Autism Awareness for First Responders
DESCRIPTION:Autism Training for First Responders \nCourse Description: This training session will focus on defining autism\, recognizing autism in the field\, and strategies for interacting and engaging with people with autism. The three most common\, high-risk calls involving people with autism will be presented and discussed as well as criminal justice contact trends and interview techniques. Information specific to fire\, EMS\, and emergency room personnel is included. The training session is presented through multimedia images\, audiovisual video\, lectures\, and handouts. Case examples will be discussed. \nInstructors: Drs. Melissa Sreckovic and Christine Kenney are associate professors at the University of Michigan-Flint in the Education Department. Dr. Sreckovic earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Special Education with a focus on autism spectrum disorders and her MA from Michigan State University in Special Education and Literacy. Dr. Kenney earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Language\, Literacy\, and Culture and her MA from Eastern Michigan University in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Special Education. Drs. Sreckovic and Kenney have worked with individuals with autism for more than 15 years\, including young children\, adolescents\, and adults. DESCRIPTION:This (2.5) day (20 hour) course is designed to provide knowledge and skills necessary to properly lead and manage a Field Training Unit.  Each Field Training Manager will be presented with ideas and techniques to assist them in becoming more professional and confident in the application of their skills.  Upon completion the Field Training Manager will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the strengths and weaknesses of the different FTO models\nIdentify demands on Field Training Managers\nDefine the duties of the Field Training Manager and Coordinator\nCorrect recruit’s poor performance\nIdentify liability issues\nUnderstand performance evaluations\nUnderstand the Rating Scale and Reference Numbers\nComplete the Weekly Managers Report\nDevelop a scenario and additional training plans\nUnderstand the purpose of program management and control\nManage the FTO\nUnderstand proper implementation of termination procedures\n\nInstructor:       Steven Kellams of FTO Solutions.  Steven Kellams retired from the Bloomington Police Department after 27 years of service. His last rank was as the Administrative Captain.
