SUMMARY:Basic FTO Course
DESCRIPTION:This training is registered as\, “Agency Elected Continuing Professional Education (CPE).” \nThis 3.5-day course is designed to provide knowledge and training to develop Field Training Officers’ skills.  Each new FTO will be presented with ideas and techniques to assist them in becoming more professional and confident in the application of their skills.  This course is based on a modified “San Jose” program.  Upon completion the FTO will be able to: \n\nDiscuss the “San Jose” and other program models\nIdentify demands on FTOs as Instructors\nList five of the errors in rating\nUnderstand the basics of Adult Learning Theory\nIdentify liability issues\nUnderstand performance evaluations\nInstruct from Training Briefs\nUnderstand the Rating Scale and Reference Numbers\nComplete the Daily Observation Report\nDevelop a Scenario and additional Training Plans\nUnderstand the purpose of program management and control\n\nInstructor:  Steven Kellams of FTO Solutions.  Steven Kellams retired from the Bloomington Police Department after 27 years of service. His last rank was as the Administrative Captain. In 2000\, then Lieutenant Kellams was instrumental in redesigning the field training program for the Bloomington\, Indiana Police Department and has taught that program to hundreds of departments throughout the United States.  He has also instructed on field training issues at the national level when he presented courses at four National Association of Field Training Officers conferences\, most recently in 2011.  In 2005\, then Lieutenant Kellams was awarded the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for Monroe County\, IN for his work with the Bloomington Police Department’s Field Training Program.  He was elected to the national NAFTO Executive Board and served as President in 2009. \nDates:             September 8 – 11\, 2025\, 8:30am – 4:30pm daily (except 8:30am-12:30 pm on last day) \nLocation:        Mott Community College – Southern Lakes Branch\, 2100 W. SUMMARY:Emergency Vehicle Operation
DESCRIPTION:This 1-day hand-on refresher course provides a review of the laws and policies related to emergency vehicle operation\, pursuits\, and the proper course of action based on related circumstances.  This training should be taken by officers that have not had the course within the last three years. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStudents are required to attend all class hours and successfully complete the course to receive a certificate. \nParticipants will start the day/classroom portion at the Flint Township Police Department\, 5200 Norko Drive\, Flint\, MI 48507\, and after instruction\, proceed to the Auto City Speedway\, 10205 N Saginaw Rd\, Clio\, MI 48420. \nEquipment Required:     – Department marked police car in proper operating condition \n-Uniform of the day (recommended) \n-Duty belt and body armor (recommended) \n□             Loose items must be removed from the trunk and passenger compartments of the vehicles. \n□             No more than two officers per vehicle. \n□             No shorts\, sandals\, or pocket weapons. \nInstructor:          Lieutenant Brian Schroer\, Bay City Department of Public Safety.  Brian earned a Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree from Hilbert College and a Master of Public Administration degree from Central Michigan University.  During his career\, Lieutenant Schroer participated in the Field Training Officer program and serves as an instructor for Emergency Vehicle Operations training.  He was promoted to the rank of      Corporal Accident Investigator in 2009\, to the rank of Sergeant in 2020\, and to the rank of Lieutenant in 2022. \nClass Size:           Limited to 12 \nCost:                      LEORTC Member Licensed Officers – Prepaid \nNon-Member Agencies – $200.00 p/p \nClick here to Register      \nThis training has been registered with MCOLES for the use of PA 302 Law Enforcement Distribution funds. \nThis training is registered as\, “Agency Elected Continuing Professional Education (CPE).” \n  \n
