SUMMARY:Introduction to Supervision
DESCRIPTION:Strategies and Tactics for New Supervisors \nFailure to train new supervisors to properly lead\, manage\, and run the day-to-day operations of the agency is one of the most common problems in public safety today. Leaders must be built within an organization and understanding the basics of leadership and management will be critical to help the new supervisor transition into their position. Developing good supervisors is one of the keys to developing a good agency.  This course will provide newly promoted first line supervisors the knowledge and skills necessary to transition into their new position. \nThis 20-hour course will: \no             Define the foundations of leadership and describe their departmental and personal vision. \no             Understand the importance of developing and strong ethical foundation of all employees. \no             Define fundamental leadership styles and understand their own personal style. \no             Define the difference between performance issues\, policy issues\, and serious misconduct as well as the supervisor’s role in handling such incidents. \no             List the day-to-day duties of a public safety-first line supervisor and how to prioritize issues. \nThis class is recommended for supervisors\, newly promoted supervisors\, or employees preparing for a future role as a supervisor. \nCourse Outline:   A pre-test written exam must be taken by each student to gauge their knowledge coupled with frequent oral quizzes.  Practical in-classroom exercises and continual evaluation of skills learned throughout the course. \nDay One\, Introduction\, Role of the Manager and Supervisor\, Leadership Foundations\, and Ethics \nDay Two\, Leadership Styles\, Rampart Lessons\, Leading Up\, Followership\, Evaluation\, Supervisor Liability\, Failure to supervise\, investigate\, and train \nDay Three\, Managing Employees\, Social Media Challenges\, Closing Remarks \nDates: \nFebruary 25\, 2025\, 8:30am-4:30pm \nFebruary 26\, 2025\, 8:30am-4:30pm \nFebruary 27\, 2025\, 8:30am-12:30pm \nLocation: \nMott Community College – Southern Lakes Branch\, 2100 W. Thompson Road\, Room 1206\, Fenton\, MI 48430. \nCost: \nLicensed Members – Pre-paid     non-licensed members – $200.00 per person \nAll Others – $400.00 per person. \nInstructor – Steve Kellams \nSteven Kellams retired in 2019 as the Administrative Captain for the Bloomington Police Department in Bloomington Indiana. Captain Kellams attended Indiana University from 1987 to 1991. In 1989\, he graduated from the Indiana University Police Academy. In 1991\, he was hired by the Bloomington Police Department and was assigned to night shift. After spending 10 years as a night shift patrol officer\, Captain Kellams was promoted to Sergeant\, and then Lieutenant.
