SUMMARY:Autism Training for First Responders
DESCRIPTION:Autism Training for First Responders \nCourse Description: This training session will focus on defining autism\, recognizing autism in the field\, and strategies for interacting and engaging with people with autism. The three most common\, high-risk calls involving people with autism will be presented and discussed as well as criminal justice contact trends and interview techniques. Information specific to fire\, EMS\, and emergency room personnel is included. The training session is presented through multimedia images\, audiovisual video\, lectures\, and handouts. Case examples will be discussed. \nInstructors: Drs. Melissa Sreckovic and Christine Kenney are associate professors at the University of Michigan-Flint in the Education Department. Dr. Sreckovic earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Special Education with a focus on autism spectrum disorders and her MA from Michigan State University in Special Education and Literacy. Dr. Kenney earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Language\, Literacy\, and Culture and her MA from Eastern Michigan University in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Special Education. Drs. Sreckovic and Kenney have worked with individuals with autism for more than 15 years\, including young children\, adolescents\, and adults. SUMMARY:Emergency Vehicle Operation - EVO
DESCRIPTION:Participants will start the day at Flint Township Police Department and after instruction proceed to Auto City Speedway. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis 1-day refresher will provide a review of the laws and policies related to emergency vehicle operation\, pursuits\, and the proper course of action based on related circumstances. This training should be taken by officers that have not had the course within the last three years. As a matter of safety\, and as a condition of participation\, officers will be asked to sign the Course Rules Memorandum. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn addition to the regular skills review\, students will participate in a pursuit check ride with an instructor. Students are required to attend all class hours and successfully complete the course to receive a certificate. Equipment Needed: –Department police car in proper operating condition -Uniform of the day (recommended) -Duty belt and body armor (recommended) Loose items must be removed from the trunk and passenger compartments of the vehicles. No more than two officers per vehicle. DESCRIPTION:In the past few years\, we have encountered a World-Wide pandemic\, something most of us never thought we would see in our lifetime. We have witnessed multiple police officers\, sworn to protect\, be convicted of inhumanely taking another’s life. We have lived in a world unimaginable to most that has adversely affected arguably everyone. \nThis course is designed to HELP police officers get through these trying times. HELP officers to understand how and why they seem to be under attack. The program will HELP officers to understand their own personal biases and how they affect their actions on the job. Officers will learn how to not end up in the news media due to actions that could have been avoided. Lastly\, officers will learn to de-escalate the potentially explosive confrontations that they will certainly experience in today’s climate. \nTOPICS INCLUDE: \n\nImplicit Bias • Unconscious Bias •Verbal De-escalation\nCultural Competency • Tactical Communication\n\nINSTRUCTOR: Darnell Blackburn – Mr. Blackburn served 19 years as a District Field Representative with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES)\, assigned to oversee standards compliance with police academies in southeastern Michigan and the regulating standards for licensing police agencies in the state. Prior to joining the MCOLES staff\, Darnell served 9 years with the Michigan State University and Auburn Hills Police Departments working in uniformed patrol\, community policing and as a narcotics investigator. He is currently following his passion and has devoted 100% of his efforts to his law enforcement training company PRAT International LLC. \nDarnell is the Founder and CEO of PRAT LLC\, a service consulting company that specializes in training law enforcement officers in Implicit and Unconscious Bias\, Cultural Competency\, Psychological Stress Management and Verbal De-Escalation. He has acted as a Facilitator for the US. Department of Justice on police and community relations in Washington D.C.\, alongside the previous Attorney Generals Loretta Lynch and Jeff Sessions. He has also been recognized as a subject matter expert on Implicit and Unconscious Bias\, training numerous police agencies on the subject matter as well cultural competency. SUMMARY:Biology/DNA Evidence Collection & Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Having a basic understanding of evidence collection is an essential responsibility of all law enforcement personnel. This course is designed for any law enforcement officer or law enforcement civilian that will investigate crimes as either a first responder\, evidence technician\, or investigator. This course will consist of lecture\, laboratory demonstrations\, and hands-on collection and processing techniques. Participants in this course will: \n\nLearn known proper biological evidence collection techniques.\nUnderstand biological evidence analysis.\nUnderstand packaging and contamination issues.\nRecognize the most probative/valuable evidence for lab examination.\nUnderstand biological evidence collection performed by SANE nurses.\nLearn available resources for vehicle and scene processing.\n\nInstructors:       Jennifer Dillon is a Forensic Scientist assigned to the Michigan State Police- Trace Evidence Unit in Northville\, Michigan.  She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forensic Criminalistics and Toxicology.  She has also completed additional course work in Molecular Biology. Danielle Hankinson has been a forensic scientist in the biology/DNA discipline for over 15 years. She has worked for the Virginia Dept. of Forensic Science and the Michigan State Police and is currently employed by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. Danielle has BS and MS degrees from Michigan State University\, is certified in Molecular Biology by the American Board of Criminalistics\, is an active member and a Past President of the Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientists\, and has taught many classes to law enforcement\, SANE personnel\, college students\, and the general public. \nLocation:     Grand Blanc Township Police Department\, 5405 S.
