SUMMARY:Edged Weapons & Knife Attacks
DESCRIPTION:People have been using edged weapons since the beginning of time. They are still around in one form or another. Ever since the terrible events of 9/11\, where the hijackers used box cutters\, there has been an increased awareness of edged weapons.  As recently as 2017\, a high-profile terrorist attack occurred at Flint Bishop Airport.  The suspect used a 12” knife to severely injure a police officer. \nThis program addresses the psychological stress of an edged weapon confrontation and how to defend against it using the OODA Loop principle. Students will participate in scenario-based practical exercises.  Most people have no idea how to defend against an attack with a sharp object. Most what you see on TV is just enough to get people hurt. \nThis training addresses two sides of the edged weapons story. First it deals with defending against an attack. DESCRIPTION:AM Session 8a-12p:\nThis patrol-based investigative training course is specifically designed for road patrol police officers\, and investigators tasked with investigating stolen vehicles. Attendees will be instructed in the most comprehensive and current auto theft investigative methods including forensic identification of suspected stolen vehicles\, past/present VIN formats\, label designs\, and locations of factory primary and secondary identification numbers. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by:\nNortheast Counterdrug Training Center\nMAGLOCLEN\nLaw Enforcement Officers Training Commission \nThis course explores the current trends\, identifiers\, and dynamics of street gang investigations. Understanding and identifying gang culture both on the street and in correctional facilities requires investigators from both local law enforcement and corrections to work together and share information. The intent of this course is to prepare officers in both large and small agencies to properly identify and interdict gang activity in their respective jurisdictions\, collect and manage their gang intelligence\, and communicate this information with neighboring jurisdictions and correctional facilities. Many states have their own gang enhancement statue\, but it is often not utilized to prosecute at the state level. The instructors of this course will demonstrate how to take the evidence and stored gang intelligence in a gang case and apply it in the courtroom. Not all street gangs establish themselves with a nationally recognized gang name. \nThe instructors will provide reasonable explanations why their local hybrid street gangs are just as violent\, and dangerous as nationally recognized gangs are in larger cities. This class will explain the command structure\, membership requirements\, and adopted signs and symbols\, hybrid gangs will create. Additional gang evidence will also be covered such as step-by-step examples of how to testify as a gang expert\, drug trafficking expert\, armed subject expert\, and cellphone records expert in court\, to assist student’s state’s attorney’s office in prosecuting your local gang members. DESCRIPTION:The Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) course was developed from the military Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) training. DESCRIPTION:Having a basic understanding of evidence collection is an essential responsibility of all law enforcement personnel. This course is designed for any law enforcement officer or law enforcement civilian that will investigate crimes as either a first responder\, evidence technician\, or investigator. This course will consist of lecture\, laboratory demonstrations\, and hands-on collection and processing techniques. Participants in this course will: \n\nLearn known proper biological evidence collection techniques.\nUnderstand biological evidence analysis.\nUnderstand packaging and contamination issues.\nRecognize the most probative/valuable evidence for lab examination.\nUnderstand biological evidence collection performed by SANE nurses.\nLearn available resources for vehicle and scene processing.\n\nInstructors:       Jennifer Dillon is a Forensic Scientist assigned to the Michigan State Police- Trace Evidence Unit in Northville\, Michigan.  She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forensic Criminalistics and Toxicology.  She has also completed additional course work in Molecular Biology. Danielle Hankinson has been a forensic scientist in the biology/DNA discipline for over 15 years. DESCRIPTION:In the past few years\, we have encountered a World-Wide pandemic\, something most of us never thought we would see in our lifetime. We have witnessed multiple police officers\, sworn to protect\, be convicted of inhumanely taking another’s life. We have lived in a world unimaginable to most that has adversely affected arguably everyone. \nThis course is designed to HELP police officers get through these trying times. HELP officers to understand how and why they seem to be under attack. The program will HELP officers to understand their own personal biases and how they affect their actions on the job. Officers will learn how to not end up in the news media due to actions that could have been avoided. Lastly\, officers will learn to de-escalate the potentially explosive confrontations that they will certainly experience in today’s climate. \nTOPICS INCLUDE: \n\nImplicit Bias • Unconscious Bias •Verbal De-escalation\nCultural Competency • Tactical Communication\n\nINSTRUCTOR: Darnell Blackburn – Mr. Blackburn served 19 years as a District Field Representative with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES)\, assigned to oversee standards compliance with police academies in southeastern Michigan and the regulating standards for licensing police agencies in the state. SUMMARY:Emergency Vehicle Operation - EVO
DESCRIPTION:Participants will start the day at Flint Township Police Department and after instruction proceed to Auto City Speedway. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis 1-day refresher will provide a review of the laws and policies related to emergency vehicle operation\, pursuits\, and the proper course of action based on related circumstances. This training should be taken by officers that have not had the course within the last three years. As a matter of safety\, and as a condition of participation\, officers will be asked to sign the Course Rules Memorandum. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn addition to the regular skills review\, students will participate in a pursuit check ride with an instructor. Students are required to attend all class hours and successfully complete the course to receive a certificate. Equipment Needed: –Department police car in proper operating condition -Uniform of the day (recommended) -Duty belt and body armor (recommended) Loose items must be removed from the trunk and passenger compartments of the vehicles. No more than two officers per vehicle.
