DESCRIPTION:WHY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID?\nMental Health First Aid (MHFA) for Public Safety teaches the skills needed to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. This evidence-based training promotes open dialogue\, reduces stigma and encourages officers to seek support when needed. Offering MHFA for Public Safety can help\ncreate a healthier\, more resilient and productive department. \nWHAT IT COVERS\n• Signs and symptoms of common mental health and substance use challenges.\n• How to recognize common risk factors and warning signs.\n• Crisis diffusion and follow-up tactics.\n• Affirming and reassurance tactics.\n• How to encourage appropriate help.\n• Self-help and support strategies. \nThe course will teach you how to\napply the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE):\n• Assess for risk of suicide or harm.\n• Listen nonjudgmentally.\n• Give reassurance and information.\n• Encourage appropriate professional help.\n• Encourage self-help and other support strategies. \nWHO SHOULD TAKE IT\n• Law enforcement\n• Other first responders\n• 911 dispatchers \nINSTRUCTOR:  David R. DESCRIPTION:            THIS CLASS WAS RESCHEDULED ON MAY 2\, 2024   \n NEW METHODS TO SOLVE COLD CASES AND OTHER MAJOR CRIMES \n  \nMajor advancements have been made in forensic DNA testing in recent years.  These advancements in technology include increased in technology include increased sensitivity\, new methods to interpret complex mixtures\, specialized search techniques of the CODIS database\, and many more.  This class will highlight these advancements and focus on utilizing them when routing DNA analysis has not solved a case.  This class will be particularly useful for looking at cold cases with a fresh eye to see if additional testing may be possible. \nTopics Covered Will Include: \n\nProbabilistic genotyping software\nFamilial searching of the CODIS database\nY-STR testing\nNew STR chemistries\nPhenotyping/ancestry testing\nCase Studies\n\nFacilitators: \nJennifer Dillon has been a forensic scientist with the MSP since 2005.  She has case work experience in both the Biology/DNA discipline and in Trace Evidence.  She is a current Board Member of the Midwest Association of Forensic Scientists and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.  Jennifer is also a member of the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts. \nDanielle Hankinson has been a forensic scientist in the Biology/DNA discipline for over 13 years.  She has worked for both the Virginia Department of Forensic Science and the MSP.   Danielle has BS and MS degrees from Michigan State University and is certified in Molecular Biology by the American Board of Criminalistics.  She is the current President of the Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientists. \nDate/Times:       Friday\, February 16\, 2024\, 8:3oam-4:30pm \nLocation:             Grand Blanc Township Police Department\, 5405 S Saginaw Street Grand Blanc\, MI 48439 \nCost:                      LEORTC Licensed Personnel – Prepaid \nNon-Licensed Members – $65 per/person \nAll Others – $130 per/person \nClick HERE to Register \n“This training has been registered with MCOLES for the use of PA 302 Law Enforcement Distribution funds.”

SUMMARY:Adult Sexual Assault Investigations
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this class is to provide police officers\, detectives\, prosecutors and CPS investigators with a better understanding of the dynamics involved in sexual assaultive crimes. \nThis seminar will give first responders and investigators a better understanding of how to properly respond to\, and investigate\, sex crimes.  The primary focus of this training will be on adult sexual assaults.  Participants will learn the importance of the initial response\, how trauma can affect the victim’s behavior and memory\, what evidence to look for\, the importance of avoiding assumptions\, sex offender typologies and strategies for investigating the offender. \nTopics to be discussed include: \n\nIdentifying and investigating different types of sex offenders\nThe effects of trauma on victims’ memory and behavior\nCorroborating the victim’s statement\nThe importance of avoiding assumptions\nEvidence procuring\, types\, and documentation.\n\n  \nInstructor:      Sergeant James Twardesky of Twardesky Consulting serves with the Warren Police Department Special Victims Investigative Unit.
