SUMMARY:Advanced Topics in DNA:  New Methods/Cold Cases
DESCRIPTION:ADVANCED TOPICS IN DNA \nNEW METHODS TO SOLVE COLD CASES AND OTHER MAJOR CRIMES \n  \nMajor advancements have been made in forensic DNA testing in recent years. These advancements in technology include increased in technology include increased sensitivity\, new methods to interpret complex mixtures\, specialized search techniques of the CODIS database\, and many more.  This class will highlight these advancements and focus on utilizing them when routing DNA analysis has not solved a case.  This class will be particularly useful for looking at cold cases with a fresh eye to see if additional testing may be possible. \nTopics Covered Will Include: \n\nProbabilistic genotyping software\nFamilial searching of the CODIS database\nY-STR testing\nNew STR chemistries\nPhenotyping/ancestry testing\nCase Studies\n\n  \nFacilitators:       Jennifer Dillon has been a forensic scientist with the MSP since 2005.  She has case work experience in both the Biology/DNA discipline and in Trace Evidence.  She is a current Board Member of the Midwest Association of Forensic Scientists and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.  Jennifer is also a member of the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts. \nDanielle Hankinson has been a forensic scientist in the biology/DNA discipline for over 15 years. She has worked for the Virginia Dept. of Forensic Science and the Michigan State Police and is currently employed by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. Danielle has BS and MS degrees from Michigan State University\, is certified in Molecular Biology by the American Board of Criminalistics\, is an active member and a Past President of the Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientists\, and has taught many classes to law enforcement\, SANE personnel\, college students\, and the general public. \nLocation:  Grand Blanc Township Police Department\, 5405 S. SUMMARY:Autism Training for First Responders
DESCRIPTION:Autism Training for First Responders \nCourse Description: This training session will focus on defining autism\, recognizing autism in the field\, and strategies for interacting and engaging with people with autism. The three most common\, high-risk calls involving people with autism will be presented and discussed as well as criminal justice contact trends and interview techniques. Information specific to fire\, EMS\, and emergency room personnel is included. The training session is presented through multimedia images\, audiovisual video\, lectures\, and handouts. Case examples will be discussed. \nInstructors: Drs. Melissa Sreckovic and Christine Kenney are associate professors at the University of Michigan-Flint in the Education Department. Dr. Sreckovic earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Special Education with a focus on autism spectrum disorders and her MA from Michigan State University in Special Education and Literacy. Dr. Kenney earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Language\, Literacy\, and Culture and her MA from Eastern Michigan University in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Special Education. Drs. Sreckovic and Kenney have worked with individuals with autism for more than 15 years\, including young children\, adolescents\, and adults. SUMMARY:Courtroom Testimony for Police Officers
DESCRIPTION:This 1 day\, dynamic\, interactive training will prepare police officers to not only survive\, but thrive in the courtroom\, even from a barrage of cross exam questions from the toughest of defense attorneys.  Participants in this class will learn all the tricks of the defense attorney trade\, how to overcome them\, and become the most effective\, persuasive\, and important player in the courtroom. \nReviews of this class have been overwhelmingly positive.  It is an exceptionally positive experience\, taught by an instructor with 30 years of courtroom experience.  It is fun\, practical\, and exceedingly helpful.  Learn all the things you were never taught in the police academy about winning convictions and making them stick!  You will participate in mock trials\, watch videos of other officer’s testimony\, and learn how to do it right!  If you’ve ever had a bad courtroom experience\, are new\, or simply need to gain some confidence\, take this course! \nThis is a full 1 day course\, consisting of 3 parts.  The first part consists of a mock trial\, where participants review police reports and actually testify in both direct and cross exam.  Attendees will alternate between playing the roles of witness\, juror\, and audience.  Everyone will participate throughout the morning\, and opportunities for frequent feedback will be given.  Cross exam will be challenging and demonstrate the most common defense techniques utilized to “trap” police officers and make them look bad.  Experience has shown that this part of the course\, utilizing audience participation and feedback\, is most appreciated and fun.  The second part consists of a lecture identifying all important aspects of effective police officer testimony\, identifying both the key factors to focus on\, as well as what to avoid.
