SUMMARY:Autism Training for First Responders
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: This training session will focus on defining autism\, recognizing autism in the field\, and strategies for interacting and engaging with people with autism. The three most common\, high-risk calls involving people with autism will be presented and discussed as well as criminal justice contact trends and interview techniques. Information specific to fire\, EMS\, and emergency room personnel is included. The training session is presented through multimedia images\, audiovisual video\, lectures\, and handouts. Case examples will be discussed. \nInstructors: Drs. Christine Kenney and Melissa Sreckovic are associate professors at the University of Michigan-Flint in the Education Department. Dr. Sreckovic earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Special Education with a focus on autism spectrum disorders and her MA from Michigan State University in Special Education and Literacy. Dr. Kenney earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Language\, Literacy\, and Culture and her MA from Eastern Michigan University in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Special Education. Drs. Sreckovic and Kenney have worked with individuals with autism for more than 15 years\, including young children\, adolescents\, and adults. SUMMARY:Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE)
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the 16-hour Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) course is to increase officer ability to observe\, identify\, and articulate the signs of impairment related to drugs\, alcohol\, or a combination of both. This training also encompasses the 4 hour Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) Refresher training. \nRequirements to attend: \n\nPolice Officers\, Motor Carrier Officers\, or Prosecutors only.  **Other individuals will not be allowed to attend**\nStudents must provide on day one valid documentation of 24 hour SFST Practitioner Training to attend. Acceptable documentation includes: SFST card\, certificate of training\, police academy graduate after January 1\, 2010.\nStudents must demonstrate proficiency in HGN\, walk and turn\, and one leg stand at the conclusion of the SFST refresher segment. DESCRIPTION:Participants will start the day at Flint Township Police Department and after instruction proceed to Auto City Speedway. \nThis 1-day refresher will provide a review of the laws and policies related to emergency vehicle operation\, pursuits\, and the proper course of action based on related circumstances. This training should be taken by officers that have not had the course within the last three years. As a matter of safety\, and as a condition of participation\, officers will be asked to sign the Course Rules Memorandum. \nIn addition to the regular skills review\, students will participate in a pursuit check ride with an instructor. SUMMARY:Patrol Rifle Instructor Course
DESCRIPTION:This course is for already certified firearms (pistol) instructors.  The student of this training will gain the knowledge of how to articulate and instruct the safe carry and storage; care and maintenance; sighting; setting up and engaging in live-fire drills; functions of the rifle and more to future operators of semi-auto patrol rifles. Please read the pre-requisites for the minimum standards for instructor candidates. \n\n\nThis course is for already certified firearms (pistol) instructors with basic AR15 user/operator course certification. Certificates of both must be presented on Day 1 to the instructors. The students of this course will gain the knowledge of how to articulate and instruct the safe carry and storage; care and maintenance; sighting; setting up and engaging in live-fire drills; functions of the rifle and more to future operators of semi-auto patrol rifles.\nOnly iron sights are permitted during the course with electronic sights familiarization on the last day of the class.  On the morning of Day 1 the student will report to the range with a zeroed rifle for a live fire pre-test course of the following:\nZero Confirmation – From the prone position fire 3 rounds into the center mass circle of zeroing target at 27 yards to verify weapon zero. If the group is outside of the zero circle the shooter gets 1 correction and fire additional 3 round group to confirm zero. Pass or Fail\nSkills Demonstration – Starting with 2 magazines with 15 rounds in each the student on command will exit a patrol car with rifle and move to a position behind a barricade. On command\, the shooter will fire 3 rounds from the support shoulder from behind cover at TCQ target 15 yards away in 7 seconds\, perform an un-timed tactical reload behind cover. Then on command will fire 3 rounds on same target from the strong side in 5 seconds. Place rifle on safe.\nMoving across the range to a second barricade the student will take up a kneeling position utilizing cover and on command fire 6 rounds on TCQ target 25 yards down range in 10 seconds. The student will then stand on command and utilizing cover\, fire 6 shots on same TCQ target in 15 seconds. From behind cover reload using the 12-round magazine. Place rifle on safe.\nOn command move to third position up range\, 50 yards from TCQ target. From firing position\, the student will shoot from the kneeling position 4 rounds in 60 seconds\, then 4 rounds from the sitting position in 45 seconds\, and finally from the prone position 4 rounds in 30 seconds.\nScore 100% in TCQ combat scoring area. \nThose unable to meet the requirements will not continue with the course. Final qualification course on Friday is 60 rounds on targets at 25\, 50\, 75\, and 100 yards.\nAs this course follows the military model of marksmanship ALL students must have a 2-point sling (attaches to the toe of the stock and to the front sling swivel under the barrel) to obtain stability of the weapon. It is yours or departments option of which you use. However\, you must pass the pre-test (described above) and the final live fire test to graduate from this course.\nThis is not a participation pass course. SUMMARY:Emergency Vehicle Operation
DESCRIPTION:Participants will start the day at Flint Township Police Department and after instruction proceed to Auto City Speedway. \nThis 1-day refresher will provide a review of the laws and policies related to emergency vehicle operation\, pursuits\, and the proper course of action based on related circumstances. This training should be taken by officers that have not had the course within the last three years. As a matter of safety\, and as a condition of participation\, officers will be asked to sign the Course Rules Memorandum. \nIn addition to the regular skills review\, students will participate in a pursuit check ride with an instructor. SUMMARY:Patrol Assisting on K9 Calls
DESCRIPTION:The call’s hot. The perimeter is tight. The channel is secure. The K-9 unit is enroute to the scene.   What should you do to increase your success when the police K-9 team shows up? \nThis dynamic hands-on training is for any officer/deputy that wants to learn firsthand on how to assist on K9 calls and get a better understanding of the capabilities of a K9 Team. Knowing the basic principles of the K-9 olfactory system can make you more successful and SAFER!  Knowledge of principles of perimeter containment\, assignment of search team dynamics and terrain issues can help you be the K-9 team’s favorite patrol officer. \nThis 8-hour training will consist of 2 hours of classroom instruction followed by 6 hours of field work assisting actual K9 handlers and their partners in various scenarios. Most of the training will be learning how to assist on perimeters and going on training tracks with the handlers. After the short classroom presentation\, participants will head out into neighborhoods\, parks\, shopping areas to do actual tracking. \nInstructors: \nPaul Connelly worked 27 yrs. at Grand Blanc Twp. Police Department\, the last 11yrs. were spent as a canine handler. Paul handled 3 narcotics/patrol canines and 1 bomb/patrol canine.  Paul is a Master Trainer through NAPCH in patrol/narcotics/explosives.  He founded J & S K9\, LLC in 2020\, which specializes in private pet training and police canine training. Paul also instructs at Oakland CC Police K9 Academy. \nJeff Antcliff: Jeff has over 31 yrs. in law enforcement\, the majority with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Dept.  He has handled police canines for over 21 yrs. Jeff is currently the Deputy Chief at Flint Police Department where he is handling his 3rd K9\, “Elvis”.  Elvis is trained in bombs/patrol work. Jeff’s first 2 canines were narcotics/patrol dogs. Jeff is currently a trainer through NAPCH and instructs at OCC Police K9 Academy. \nDate & Time: Tuesday.
