SUMMARY:Autism Awareness for First Responders
DESCRIPTION:Autism Training for First Responders \nCourse Description: This training session will focus on defining autism\, recognizing autism in the field\, and strategies for interacting and engaging with people with autism. The three most common\, high-risk calls involving people with autism will be presented and discussed as well as criminal justice contact trends and interview techniques. Information specific to fire\, EMS\, and emergency room personnel is included. The training session is presented through multimedia images\, audiovisual video\, lectures\, and handouts. Case examples will be discussed. \nInstructors: Drs. Melissa Sreckovic and Christine Kenney are associate professors at the University of Michigan-Flint in the Education Department. Dr. Sreckovic earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Special Education with a focus on autism spectrum disorders and her MA from Michigan State University in Special Education and Literacy. Dr. Kenney earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Language\, Literacy\, and Culture and her MA from Eastern Michigan University in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Special Education. Drs. Sreckovic and Kenney have worked with individuals with autism for more than 15 years\, including young children\, adolescents\, and adults. DESCRIPTION:COURSE DESCRIPTION: The stress associated with law enforcement and other first response professions is enormous.  Individuals working in these most stressful occupations also face the probability that at some point in their career they will also be affected by some type of traumatic or critical incident stress.  This workshop will provide first responders and/or their family members the information necessary to recognize the signs and symptoms of job-related stress\, especially as it relates to suicide\, and also provide them with strategies that will enable them to provide immediate support for individuals who may be considering suicide.  Certificates will be provided. \n \n\n\nABOUT THE PRESENTER: David R. DESCRIPTION:This 3.5-day course is designed to provide knowledge and training to develop Field Training Officers’ skills.  Each new FTO will be presented with ideas and techniques to assist them in becoming more professional and confident in the application of their skills.  This course is based on a modified “San Jose” program.  Upon completion the FTO will be able to: \n\nDiscuss the “San Jose” and other program models\nIdentify demands on FTOs as Instructors\nList five of the errors in rating\nUnderstand the basics of Adult Learning Theory\nIdentify liability issues\nUnderstand performance evaluations\nInstruct from Training Briefs\nUnderstand the Rating Scale and Reference Numbers\nComplete the Daily Observation Report\nDevelop a Scenario and additional Training Plans\nUnderstand the purpose of program management and control\n\nInstructor:  Steven Kellams of FTO Solutions.  Steven Kellams retired from the Bloomington Police Department after 27 years of service. His last rank was as the Administrative Captain.
