SUMMARY:Background Investigations for Michigan Police Applicants
DESCRIPTION:State statutes require law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough and comprehensive background investigations of those who will be licensed as fully empowered law enforcement officers in the state of Michigan. A comprehensive background investigation is perhaps the most important component of the hiring process because it helps agencies select only those who are the best fit for both the organization and the communities they serve. In 2019\, the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards adopted an Advisory Standard to assist investigators in their efforts to obtain the necessary and relevant information on an applicant’s background\, as part of the agency’s overall selection and hiring process. Thorough work done at the beginning of the hiring process\, with attention to detail\, can help agencies select the right applicant for the right reasons. The purpose of this course is to provide participants with useful information and resources that will assist them in conducting a thorough background investigation. Those attending will learn about\ncontemporary strategies in completing a comprehensive\, competency-based pre-employment background investigation on police applicants.\n\nTopics will include: \n\nThe police officer hiring process.\nMCOLES Advisory Standard & Selected Best Practices for Background Investigations\nLegal concerns\nSuggested background investigation forms.\nCriminal record searches\nDocument verification\nBackground Interviewing\nEmployment verification\nMilitary service verification\nEducational verification\nReference checks\nInternet searches\nOut of state applicants\nBackground investigation reports\n\n\nAttendees are encouraged to bring to the class a blank copy of their own department’s background questionnaire for\npolice applicants.\n\n\nInstructor:  Pete Ackerly is a retired Special Agent from the Michigan Department of Attorney General and has conducted pre-service background investigations on applicants for law enforcement positions across the state of Michigan.  Pete currently works for MCOLES\, where he conducts Standards and Compliance investigations.\n\nDate/Time:  Thursday\, October 16\, 2025\, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm\n\nLocation:  Grand Blanc Township Police Department\, 5405 S. SUMMARY:Courtroom Testimony for Police/Corrections Officers
DESCRIPTION:This 1 day\, dynamic\, interactive training will prepare police officers to not only survive\, but thrive in the courtroom\, even from a barrage of cross exam questions from the toughest of defense attorneys.  Participants in this class will learn all the tricks of the defense attorney trade\, how to overcome them\, and become the most effective\, persuasive\, and important player in the courtroom. \nReviews of this class have been overwhelmingly positive.  It is an exceptionally positive experience\, taught by an instructor with 30 years of courtroom experience.  It is fun\, practical\, and exceedingly helpful.  Learn all the things you were never taught in the police academy about winning convictions and making them stick!  You will participate in mock trials\, watch videos of other officer’s testimony\, and learn how to do it right!  If you’ve ever had a bad courtroom experience\, are new\, or simply need to gain some confidence\, take this course! \nThis is a full 1 day course\, consisting of 3 parts.  The first part consists of a mock trial\, where participants review police reports and actually testify in both direct and cross exam.  Attendees will alternate between playing the roles of witness\, juror\, and audience.  Everyone will participate throughout the morning\, and opportunities for frequent feedback will be given.  Cross exam will be challenging and demonstrate the most common defense techniques utilized to “trap” police officers and make them look bad.  Experience has shown that this part of the course\, utilizing audience participation and feedback\, is most appreciated and fun.  The second part consists of a lecture identifying all important aspects of effective police officer testimony\, identifying both the key factors to focus on\, as well as what to avoid. Topics include: \n*Better Report writing                                                                                    *Preparation \n*Courtroom demeanor\, body language and other intangibles              *Anticipating the cross exam \n*Avoiding common defense traps                                                               *Persuasion techniques \n*Common problems and areas for police officer testimony                   *Projecting confidence \n*Examples from real trials and real police reports \nPart three is a compilation of videos from actual trials.  Attendees can see the techniques discussed throughout the day exhibited in real\, live trial testimony from other police officers.  The videos demonstrate and reinforce the principles that have been discussed throughout the day in an authentic setting and bring it all home. \nInstructor: Stuart L. SUMMARY:4th Amendment: Updated Search & Seizure for Patrol
DESCRIPTION:Law Enforcement Regional Training Commission \npresents \n4th Amendment: Updated Search & Seizure for Patrol \n \nDate: February 18\, 2026\, 8:30am-4:30pm \nLocation: Grand Blanc Township Police Department\, 5405 S. Saginaw Street\, Grand Blanc\, MI 48507 \nEvery officer who makes arrests\, conducts searches of any kind\, or detains anyone for the purposes of questioning them\, must thoroughly understand the parameters set forth by the Fourth Amendment related to search and seizure. A lack of that understanding gravely jeopardizes cases and exposes you and your department to expensive legal liability and ultimately give criminals an avoidable and undeserved ticket to freedom. \nThis course is designed to give law enforcement professionals of all ranks a complete understanding of the Constitutional parameters that apply to search and seizure; the protections due citizens and the leeway officers have while performing their duties. \nAmong other topics\, Detective Mike Montgomery\, a detective with the West Chicago Police Department\, will approach—in an extremely practical and understandable fashion—topics like: \n\nCitizens’ reasonable expectation of privacy.\nNon-physical and physical intrusions.\nLegal requirements to launch an investigation\, execute arrests or conduct searches.\nWhat constitutes reasonable\, articulable suspicion and probable cause.\nHandling drivers and passengers during traffic stops.\nLegally extending stops for the purpose of investigation.\nPlain view\, plain smell and K9 sniffs.\nPat downs\, frisks and plain feel…and much more.\n\nThis course is both crucial and immediately applicable. No officer can afford to miss this information\, and no agency can have officers who don’t fully understand the Fourth Amendment! \nCost:               LEORTC Licensed Members – Pre-Paid \nNon- Licensed Members – $99 \nAll Others- $199 \nClick to REGISTER below: \nhttps://form.123formbuilder.com/6888767/training-application-form \nThis training is registered as\, “Commission Designated Continuing Professional Education (CPE).”
