SUMMARY:Fair & Impartial Policing
DESCRIPTION:The “fair and impartial policing perspective” reflects a new way of thinking about the issue of biased policing–based on the science of bias. Social psychologists who study bias report that bias has changed in our society.   As one scientist proclaimed\, “This is not your grandmother’s prejudice” (Fiske\, 2008).   These scientists have determined—through voluminous research on this topic—that bias today is less likely to manifest as explicit bias (such as racism) and more likely to manifest as “implicit bias.”   Social psychologists have shown that “implicit” bias can impact what people perceive and do; it works below consciousness and manifests even in people who consciously hold non-prejudiced attitudes. Like explicit bias\, implicit bias can produce discriminatory actions. \nThe 6 hour training covers the (1) science of bias and (2) implications of the science-based perspective for agency policy and practice. \nTopics Covered: \n\nWhat community members and police think about biased policing\nThe social science of human bias and its implications for policing \nThe benefits and elements of a comprehensive program to facilitate fair and impartial policing\nMeaningful policy\nLeadership\, supervision and accountability\nRecruitment/hiring \nEducation/training\nAssessing institutional policies and practices\nMeasurement\n\nResponding to disparity charges\nData Collection: The issues\, the facts\n\n\nOutreach to communities\nHow to implement a comprehensive program.   \n\n\nFacilitators: Sgt. Matt Elzinga and Detective Karen Rivard from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety have extensive law enforcement experience and are certified Fair and Impartial Policing Trainers. \nCost:\nLEORTC Licensed Members – Prepaid\nLEORTC Non-Licensed Personnel – $50 p/p\nNon-Member Agencies – $95 p/p\nClass Size: Limited to 25 (2 per agency for initial registrations) \n“This training has been registered with MCOLES for the use of PA 302 Law Enforcement Distribution funds.” \nClick HERE to Register

SUMMARY:Firearms Simulator Decision Making
DESCRIPTION:THIS CLASS IS FULL.  PLEASE SEE OUR NEXT CLASS SCHEDULED FOR MAY 22\, 2018 \n  \nThis course provides various scenarios where officers respond to and react to situations that they may encounter while on duty. Officers interact with computer generated scenarios using verbal commands\, use of cover\, and the use of firearms as needed.  Officers are critiqued at the completion of the scenario during the post critical incident reviews. \nLaw Enforcement Regional Training Academy (LERTA) has one of the few fully integrated driving and force options simulator’s in the area.  With this system\, officers will do exactly the same things in the training room that they do on duty: receiving and responding to a call in their patrol car\, conducting an investigation or a field interview\, making a simulated arrest\, or even implementing a level of force necessary to gain compliance from a subject. \nParticipants will be credited for 2 hours of training with MCOLES.  Training blocks of time will be assigned to individuals as they enroll for the class.  Training blocks are:  8:30am – 10:30am     10:30am – 12:30pm     1:00pm – 3:00pm.  We will be able to accommodate four (4) trainees per block. \nINSTRUCTOR:  Dunell Chaney is retired from the City of Flint Police Department and is currently a Sergeant with the Mott Community College Campus Safety for approximately 30 years of law enforcement experience.  He is a MILO/FAAC instructor\, firearms instructor\, defensive tactics instructor\, and active shooter instructor.  He has been an instructor for LERTA for the last five (5) years. \nCOST:  LEORTC Licensed Personnel – Prepaid     All Others – $35.00 p/p \nREQUIREMENTS:  Officers are to report in their duty wear.  Weapons will be secured prior to participating in the training.  This is a FAAC Simulator which incorporates both a driving and force options.  All weaponry/radio systems are furnished. \nClick HERE to Register \n\n+ GOOGLE CALENDAR+ ICAL EXPORT

SUMMARY:Traumas of Law Enforcement
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nEach year\, Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) provides training to America’s law enforcement agencies on how to appropriately respond to officers and their families affected by line-of-duty traumas through the “Traumas of Law Enforcement” trainings.  At these trainings\, instructors will present information that is important to America’s law enforcement agencies regarding appropriate response to line-of-duty death\, disability\, critical incidents\, and police suicide. \nThe training is presented over three days and includes 21-hours of class time.  The “Traumas of Law Enforcement” has been said to be “the best training I have taken in my entire law enforcement career” by many who have attended. \nAt the conclusion of this training\, the participants will have information about: \n1.  How an agency’s response to tragedy directly affects the level of distress of their officers and surviving family members. \n2.  How an individual officer’s pre-planning may directly affect the public safety officer benefit their family may receive in the event of their line-of-duty death. \n3.  How an officer can successfully navigate the cumulative stress caused by experiencing critical incidents throughout a law enforcement career and how their agency can assist with this. \n4.  The warning signs and symptoms of Police Suicide. \nAll of the participants in this training will be provided information about the available federal public safety officer benefits and their individual state benefits. \nSome of the same issues that affect survivors come into play for officers with disabilities and those coping with trauma.  Recognizing the importance of helping agencies provide appropriate support for survivors and injured or traumatized officers\, C.O.P.S. provides this training free of charge.  HOWEVER\, PRE-REGISTRATION IS MANDATORY and participants are responsible for their own travel costs. \n  \nWho Should Attend? \nLaw Enforcement Administrators\, Officers and Deputies\, Peer Support Team Members\, Employee Assistance Personnel\, Planning and Research\, Chaplains\, Survivors\, and Law Enforcement Spouses. \nCost:  There is no cost for this training. \nCourse Times:  April 23 & 24\, 8am – 5pm\, April 25\, 8am – 3pm \nRegistration:  LEORTC members contact the commission at (810) 232-2654     All others – register on line at:  https://registration.copsdb.org/register.aspx?newreg=true&EventID=76 \nC.O.P.S. has a registration deadline for this conference of April 1\, 2018. \nHoliday Inn Gateway hotel room rate is $79.00 per night plus 11% sales tax.
