SUMMARY:CopShock
DESCRIPTION:This two-day class was developed to address officer responses to Critical Incidents or “Toxic” experiences that have the potential to emotionally cripple officers and to address the “corrosive” or cumulative effects of the job that assault officers every day. \nThe law enforcement community rewards traits such as physical toughness\, independence\, emotional restriction\, and the ability to react in the face of traumatic events.  However\, it is unquestionable that police officers and support personnel face specific psychological distress on the job as a result of exposure to toxic and corrosive situations.  As a result\, many officers suffer from high rates of depression\, anxiety\, stress\, anger management problems\, and relationship difficulties.  At times\, the level of critical incident stress and occupational stress leads to: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, Major Depression\, Substance Abuse\, Alcoholism\, and at worst\, Suicide.  However\, by studying and understanding potential emotional and physical reactions to critical incidents and everyday organizational stressors\, officers can develop the personal and social resilience to truly survive and grow in the law enforcement professional and their personal lives. \n*******Dr. Gardner’s classes have continually received exceptional evaluations.******* \nInstructor:  LaMaurice H. SUMMARY:Firearms Simulator Decision Making
DESCRIPTION:*Currently the Drive portion of the simulator is out of service* \nThis course provides various scenarios where officers respond to and react to situations that they may encounter while on duty. Officers interact with computer generated scenarios using verbal commands\, use of cover\, and the use of firearms as needed.  Officers are critiqued at the completion of the scenario during the post critical incident reviews. \nLaw Enforcement Regional Training Academy (LERTA) has one of the few fully integrated driving and force options simulator’s in the area.  With this system\, officers will do exactly the same things in the training room that they do on duty: receiving and responding to a call in their patrol car\, conducting an investigation or a field interview\, making a simulated arrest\, or even implementing a level of force necessary to gain compliance from a subject. \nParticipants will be credited for 2 hours of training with MCOLES.  Training blocks of time will be assigned to individuals as they enroll for the class.  Training blocks are:  8:30am – 10:30am     10:30am – 12:30pm     1pm – 3pm.  We will be able to accommodate four (4) trainees per block. \nINSTRUCTOR:  Dunell Chaney is retired from the City of Flint Police Department and is currently a Sergeant with the Mott Community College Campus Safety for approximately 30 years of law enforcement experience.  He is a MILO/FAAC instructor\, firearms instructor\, defensive tactics instructor\, and active shooter instructor.  He has been an instructor for LERTA for the last five (5) years. \nCOST:  LEORTC Licensed Personnel – Prepaid     All Others – $45.00 p/p \nREQUIREMENTS:  Officers are to report in their duty wear.  Weapons will be secured prior to participating in the training.  This is a FAAC Simulator which incorporates both a driving and force options.  All weaponry/radio systems are furnished. \nLOCATION:  Mott Community College – Southern Lakes Campus Building C\, 2100 W. SUMMARY:Legally Justified But Was it Avoidable - THIS CLASS IS POSTPONED TILL FALL
DESCRIPTION:THIS CLASS IS POSTPONED TILL FALL \nA crucial question at the core of every use of force incident is this: \nWas it avoidable? This course helps you make that decision. \n  \nThe 1989 the Graham v. Connor case established that the moment an officer uses force is all that matters when determining if it was objectively reasonable. Further it determined that the moment could not be judged “with the 20/20 vision of hindsight.” In other words\, how that moment came to be matters not\, only what was happening during it. \nThat said\, this legal doctrine does not (and should not) preclude officers\, trainers and supervisors from examining cases with that 20/20 vision. With a goal of avoiding the avoidable\, we should look backward from the moment force was used and honestly assess whether the officer\, by action or lack of action\, contributed to its ultimate need. \nLegally Justified; But Was it Avoidable analyzes dozens of recent use of force videos and focuses on the totality of the interaction. We dissect the behavior of the offender and more importantly\, the thoughts and behavioral processes of the officer(s) involved. Specifically\, we consider if poor or ill-advised tactics\, ineffective communication\, a lack of personal control and/or a misunderstanding of acute stress led the officer(s) to escalate the event unintentionally and unconsciously. \nIn this course we will discuss: \n\nForce: Can it be avoided? How? Can it be?\nPowerful research: how stress breaks down your ability to process information\nHandling pressure at the pivotal moment\nDid poor tactics contribute to the need to shoot?\nDon’t throw fuel on the fire! Controlling the inner “idiot”\nThe overall goal and how stress diverts from that mission\nSlowing things down can be your most powerful tactic\nA hard look at the reason mistakes are being made\nCognitive deterioration leads to “Decision Decline”\nAvoiding Behavioral and Content Loops\nThe Power of Mid-Event Disengagement\n\n  \nDate:               March 10\, 2021                   Time: 8am – 5pm \nLocation:         Delta College\, 1961 Delta Road\, Room G-160 \n                        University Center\, MI 48710 (GPS users may want to use Bay City)                                                 \nCost:                LEORTC licensed members-prepaid \n                        Delta Members – $165       \n                        All others-$195 \nClick HERE to Register \nDelta College Consortium members register at www.delta.edu/policeacademy or call (989) 686-9176
