SUMMARY:Police Professionalism and Tactics
DESCRIPTION:Television and movie shows\, such as T.J. Hooker\, Officer Ben Sherman (Southland)\, NYPD Blue to name just a few has created a “false image” of the realities a street officer faces daily. The difference between success and failure so often lies in the training\, experience\, and sometimes luck of the Officer. \nThis course examines the current trends facing a street officer. From seasoned veterans to the newest recruit\, the task of policing becomes more difficult day to day. The success of an officer depends on preparation\, education\, and the right training. \nThis course examines key terms and expectations from a realistic and informed perspective. Police training never stops regardless of the amount of experience or time an officer has on the street. Too many officers have died from fundamental errors that could have been prevented. Many espouse that police work is safer today than ever before. The goal of this training is to make that statement a fact based on an officers response to risk\, confrontation\, and competency. \nThis course will examine: \n\nOfficer safety/Public safety through effective and proven tactics\nPolice/Citizen encounters-How to enhance relationships through communication and interaction\nProfessional Standards- Every engagement is an opportunity to build community relationships\nDe-escalation- Proven tactics to minimize both risk and confrontation. Know when to respond with proven skills.\nUnderstanding Human Behaviors- Know how stress affects human instincts\, how the brain works\, when stress is at a critical stage.\nEthics- A realistic understanding of police standards\, expectations\, and acceptable behavior\nRecognizing the attributes of an attack and reacting accordingly\nUnderstanding use of force\, case law\, and agency philosophy\n\nCourse Instructor: Retired Sergeant Keith Wenzel has nearly forty years of police service\, mostly working for a major department as a patrol officer and supervisor. Understanding and relating to the ever-changing environment of a professional police officer\, he relates to students in proven teaching methods that promote clear understanding of the demands and expectations of society’s crime fighters. As an instructor\, he brings to the profession a vast amount of experience and knowledge from working in a diverse community.  As a national and international law enforcement instructor\, he specializes in the subjects of officer safety\, risk management\, critical incident\, and patrol tactics. \nCost:           LEORTC Licensed Members – Prepaid       All Others – $95 per person \nLocation:    Baker College\, Center for Undergraduate Studies\, Rooms E101/E103\, 1050 W.
