Dementia Awareness for Law Enforcement
This training is registered as, “Mandated Continuing Professional Education (CPE).”
This course educates officers on identifying signs of dementia, communicating effectively with affected individuals, reducing use-of-force risks, and navigating legal and ethical concerns during interactions. It will equip officers with the skills to identify and safely respond to individuals with dementia, reducing risk and liability.
Signs of dementia often mimic intoxication, resistance, or defiance. Incorrect responses can lead to escalation or litigation. This training covers de-escalation methods, medical resources, legal reporting mandates, interactive lectures, group discussions, video clips, and scenario-based walkthroughs.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify key signs and symptoms of dementia.
- Understand how dementia affects behavior, perception, and memory.
- Apply de-escalation strategies tailored to dementia-related behaviors.
- Recognize the legal protections and reporting responsibilities related to dementia cases.
- Utilize community and medical resources during response or follow-up.

Instructor: Lawrence Kosmalski is a MCOLES Certified Instructor with extensive experience in police response to mental health and cognitive conditions. He earned a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Lourdes University, a BA in Emergency and Disaster Mgt., and Co-Authored publication “Police Response to Mental Health” in 2025. He is a certified arson investigator and instructor for ASP, OC. PPCT, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed.
