FORCE – How to Prevent The Avoidable

Hosted By

Law Enforcement Officers Regional Training Commission

To fulfill both public expectations and legal requirements, officers must use their skills, tactics and assessment options to avoid using force. Although the law doesn’t allow judgment with 20/20 hindsight, it shouldn’t stop officers, trainers and supervisors from making it an obligatory practice to examine force events with that perspective. FORCE: Tactical Options to Avoid the Avoidable does just that. YOU are the ultimate decision maker. Your tactics, communication and control directly influence whether an encounter escalates or de-escalates. This course is designed to empower you with the tools to make the best decision possible, with the ultimate goal of avoiding force whenever safely and reasonably possible.

Some topics include: Deconstruct Critical Incidents, Identify and Correct Avoidable Mistakes: Learn to recognize how poor tactics, ineffective communication, a lack of personal control, or a misunderstanding of acute stress can unintentionally and unconsciously escalate an event, Analysis of The Graham Standard and the 2025 Unanimous Supreme Court Decision Barnes v. Felix.
